What is Arthritis?
There are more than 100 types of Arthritis, all with different causes and treatment methods. It can also be an informal name for joint pain or joint disease. Arthritis strikes people of all ages, races, and gender, and is the leading cause of disability in the United States.
How Common is Arthritis?
More than 350 million adults and nearly half-a-million children have some type of arthritis! The most common symptoms of arthritis include joint pain, stiffness, tenderness, inflammation and swelling of the joint, and restricted movement of the joints. These arthritis symptoms may be anywhere from mild to severity, and their severity can fluctuate.
What Causes Arthritis?
The cause of arthritis isn’t always known, but it can be linked to genetics (hereditary factors), injury, infections, autoimmune disorders, and other causes, too, including aging, obesity, previous joint issues, a sedentary lifestyle, and even a family history of arthritis.
While there are no guaranteed ways to prevent arthritis, there are ways to reduce your risk, depending on the type of arthritis. In general, though, eating well-balanced and anti-inflammatory diet, avoiding inflammatory foods (or eating them in moderation), keeping a healthy weight and active lifestyle, and other healthy lifestyle choices can all help lower your risk of developing arthritis in the future.
