Every day, 10,000 Americans turn 65 years old, and every day, they’re redefining what it means to grow older. At GreatCall, we truly believe that technology is transforming the way Americans age, and have seen its positive impact first-hand. As a company that creates products and services that work together to allow older adults to stay safe, connected and healthy, stories of older adults inspire us every day.
To that end, we recently challenged documentary filmmakers to tell a story to start a conversation about what growing older means in our current culture, and maybe even how technology is impacting that journey. Here is filmmaker Michael Ulmer’s thoughts on his take on this subject.
Grandpa’s Hot Rod Hobby
“My father, Mike Ulmer has been restoring cars his whole life. I became fascinated with the idea that in some ways, working on cars hasn’t changed much since he started as a teenager. After all, a wrench back then is still a wrench now. Albeit, the wrench now may be a little fancier, but they still do the same thing. I sat down with Mike to discuss how technology has changed his hobby and his personal life. I expected to discuss major changes in car innovation, but was surprised when Mike began to discuss how communication advancements have been the biggest change. Back in the day he had to find a person who knew the type of car he was working on to help him troubleshoot problems. Now he has answers to any question at his fingertips through his phone and computer with resources from all over the world through the internet.”
